Requena is located in the westernmost area of the province of Valencia, where the river Cabriel limits it by the west and the south with deep gorges; and by the East and North, the Sierra de Juan Navarro and the peak of El Tejo (1,250 m.) separate it from the Serrania del Turia. The Magro River is one of the accidents that most mark this plain, in which several cultivated areas extend, predominantly the vineyards, on which the local economy is based.
The municipal area of Requena, is one of the most extensive in Spain with an area of 814 km and an average altitude above sea level of 692 meters. At present it has 21,394 inhabitants (INE 2011) distributed between the urban area and its 25 districts.
Geographically it is located between the Castilian plateau and the Mediterranean of which only 64 Kms.
Requena is the most important nucleus of the so-called Valencia Castellana, and is the administrative, legal, economic and service capital of the extensive territory that makes up its judicial district.
Requena is connected by means of the A-3 Highway at 64 Kms. From Valencia and 275 Kms. From Madrid. By the N-330 Almansa- Alicante and the N-322 joins us with Albacete.
Requena is also connected by the Valencia-Cuenca-Madrid railway and AVE Madrid Comunidad Valenciana.
Between the end of August and the beginning of September, Requena celebrates in honor of its patron saint the Virgen de los Dolores, its Feria and Fiesta de la Vendimia. With the Harvest Festival, declared of Tourist Interest in 1966 and considered to be the oldest and one of the most important in Spain, it demonstrates the collective joy that is felt when contemplating the treading of the first grape bunches of our land. This party is inclusive, generous, different, popular and sober, with tradition and roots.
Among the most representative events of the Harvest Festival are:
- Stepped and blessed of the first grapes.
- Free tasting of our delicious wines that flow from the Universal Monument to the Harvest and the allegorical sources.
- Act of Proclamation of the Queen and her Court of Honor.
- Nights of the Wine, of the Labrador, of the Absent Requenense, the “Zurra”.
- Offering of Flowers and Fruits to the Employer.
- Medieval Market, located in the Barrio de la Villa.
- Parade, parades enlivened by charangas, acts and musicals.
Requenense Fair of the Wine (FEREVIN) is one of the most important monographic samples about wines of the Valencian Community. FEREVIN, which was born in 1991 with the aim of promoting and favoring the wines of the region, has established itself as a firm reference for the wine sector, becoming the best showcase for the wines and wineries of the Utiel-Requena Denomination of Origin,
The fair is an ideal meeting point for all professionals in the wine sector. It brings together both winemakers and distributors and professionals in the hotel and restaurant industry. But above all FEREVIN is a bet aimed at consumers and, ultimately, all wine lovers.
Sample of Artisan and Quality Sausage
Based on our cuisine and especially on the sausage, the second week of February is the Artisan and Quality Sausage Exhibition, organized by M.I. City Council of Requena and with the collaboration of the Governing Body of the I.G.P. “Requena sausage”.
This sample allows the visitor, through the purchase of a ticket, to taste our sausages and typical dishes such as: longaniza, chorizo, güeña, sobrasada, sausage, dog, blood sausage, garlic arriero and morteruelo. The Requena sausage is the reflection of tradition and history with a town. Its elaboration, in an artisanal way, allows us to take care of every detail to maintain its good quality.
The Sample of Sausage marks the gastronomic calendar of the Valencian Community and also offers the possibility of knowing and enjoying our city.
The murgas, the comparsas or the parades have increased the fame of the Carnival of Requena. The act that differentiates the carnivals of the municipality from the rest of localities is the amusing proclamation of the King of Cepas, a solemn ceremony that is lived with great intensity. “La Mascarada” and “Concurso de Letrilla” are followed by a large audience that knows how to appreciate the ingenuity and grace of them. The end of the Carnival is celebrated with the children’s parade, the “Judas Colgado” and the “Burial of the Sardine” after kissing and condolences to the King of Cepas.
The Holy Week of Requena stands out for its sobriety and its austere character. From the Friday of Dolores to the Resurrection, which takes place on Holy Saturday, different acts and processional parades are celebrated.
During Holy Week, in the Temple of Santa María, they celebrate the Sacred Music Week with a variety of concerts and musical performances.
The festive calendar includes a set of festive traditions worth knowing and enjoying. In winter the bonfires, the parades with “Pan Bendito” cakes and the traditional “Parás” are the main protagonists of the festivities in honor of San Sebastián, San Antón, San Blas, the Virgin of Charity and San Nicolás .
We can also highlight the recovered songs of the “Mayos” and the “Junios”.
Throughout the year, parties are held in each of the villages in honor of their respective patrons.
